Saving Money is as Important as Making Money

As I see it there are two ways of expressing “saving money”. You can save money so it adds up, like in a bank account or you can save money by buying something on sale or not buying it at all. Both are very good habits to get into. But today I’m discussing the latter.

When you go shopping to you use coupons? Do you shop for bargains? Do you use discount clubs and dollar stores? While there is nothing wrong with trying to save money, it’s important to make sure of two key factors.

The first is do I really need this? If you can answer no then this is an easy task. If you answer no, but I want it then you need to consider if you’re still going to want it a week from now, a month from now, a year from now. How long have you considered this purchase? Do you have a place to keep it or will it become clutter? Do you really care about this item or is it just trendy?

The second is, will this purchase save me money in the long run or will it end up costing me more money? If you are buying cheap, the money you save will be lost if the item is inferior. It could end up costing much more for repairs or replacement down the road.

Save your money: cut out the coupons, look through the sales flyers and discount racks. But shop smart and get your money’s worth, even if that means leaving it in the store.

What do you do to save money when you shop? Do you have your own shopping secrets? Blog about them here in the comments, I’d love to hear them!
