Claude Monet’s famous “Water Lily Pond” aka “Le Bassin aux Nymphéas” was sold last month (6/24) at Christie’s auction house in London for $80,451,178, breaking the record for the most expensive artwork sold in this location. “Water Lily Pond” was one of a collection of four that was signed, dated and released by Monet in 1919. The painting was only expected to sell for up to $48 million and by far surpassed expectations. The painting was previously sold for $320,000 in 1971 to a private collector, making this the first time it’s been on display since then.
